About
Social Analytics Data Lab
A computational social science lab at the University of Delaware.
About the Lab
The Social Analytics Data Lab (SADL) is a computational social science lab at the University of Delaware, directed by Professor Benjamin E. Bagozzi. SADL builds open datasets, statistical methods, and software for political data that are messy, incomplete, or hard to measure, and applies them to political violence, environmental politics, government transparency, and the information environment.
Graduate and undergraduate lab members work on funded projects that produce datasets, R packages, replication materials, and peer-reviewed publications.
Academic Profile
Professor Bagozzi's research develops statistical and computational methods for political data that are flawed in systematic ways, such as inflated, underdispersed, misclassified, or underreported outcomes, and turns those methods into open-source software like the R packages underdisp and iop. He applies these tools, along with text-as-data, network, and machine-learning approaches, to questions of political violence and state repression, climate and environmental politics, and government transparency and accountability. A growing line of his work studies the information environment itself: misinformation, state-linked manipulated media, and how large language models shape and evaluate political news.
Education
PhD and MA, Political Science, Penn State; MPIA, International Politics, UC San Diego; BA degrees in Psychology and Spanish, Michigan State.
Current Appointments
Professor of Political Science & International Relations and Associate Director of the Data Science Institute at the University of Delaware.
Mission
SADL aims to make hard-to-measure political phenomena measurable. We release our datasets and tools openly, document them for reuse, and share replication materials so that other researchers can build on our work.
Current support includes two NSF awards on which Professor Bagozzi is co-PI: SCIPE (OAC-2417814, 2024–2029), building a regional computational research workforce, and CC* Data Storage (OAC-2321980, 2023–2027). Past support includes NSF DMS-1737865, on which he was PI, as well as the Knight Foundation and the Department of Defense.
